What does HTML5 bring to the table? (An HTML5 Slideshow)

Some time ago, I was asked to put together a presentation on the differences and improvements of HTML5. I was very satisfied with the end result and thought it would be helpful to others, so I posted the work for others to use. This morning, I came across a fantastic slideshow that not only gives you a great synopsis of features and improvements, but does so in an HTML5-enabled website with working HTML5 examples inline!

Excellent Javascript Library Comparison Chart!

Was browsing around on Noupe and stumbled across this fantastic chart and decided it needed to be shared with everyone. I’ve always wanted to see an apple-to-apples comparison of the these libraries. Learning new frameworks and understanding their quirks takes time and nothing beats first-hand experience, but this chart definitely gives you a good idea of what direction to start in.

Surprisingly, jQuery is at least twice as slow as every library listed according to this test and many more times that according to the chart. Still, comparing that with some of the syntax gymnastics you have to do to perform a simple selector (the most commonly performed task when dealing with DOM manipulation) with these other libraries, I’ll stick with my first love.

Has Yahoo Pipes reached its potential?

As a project, I was asked to build a customized feed using Yahoo Pipes. This service provides users the ability to remix data on the internet using an intuitive visual programming environment and has been on the internets for what will be three years come February 2010. At its inception, Tim O’Reilly lauded the service as a milestone in internet computing. Now that Pipes has had an opportunity to clean itself up and get comfortable, how has it really changed the landscape of internet computing?

Quick Sequence (plus other) Diagrams!!

Was just referred a service online which generates sequence diagrams for modeling communication between components. You type in the interactions in text and it generates the image for you on the fly!

This is a great find and will try it out in my next project.

Edit: And if quick sequence diagrams didn’t do it for you, here’s a program that makes almost every other type of diagram Visio-style. There is a one-diagram limit if you don’t want to pony up the monthly cash, but it’s great for one-off diagrams!
